Solid Surface Overview

Solid surface is a non-porous, low-maintenance material used for surfaces such as countertops. It can mimic the appearance of stone, wood, and other naturally occurring materials. At the hands of a trained craftsman, it can even be joined invisibly. Typically manufactured in sheet form for fabrication into finished countertops, solid surfaces can also be cast into a variety of shapes, including sinks, shower pans, and bathtubs.

Solid surface products are man-made stone-substitute material. Other common terms for these kinds of materials include things like Cultured Stone, Cultured Onyx, Cultured Granite, Cultured Marble, and Synthetic Stone. Besides competing with natural granite and marble, which are typically very expensive, these materials also compete with more traditional materials such as tile, porcelain, enameled steel, Formica, and fiberglass, which are typically more cost-effective than natural stone.

Benefits of Using Solid Surface

Cultured Onyx, our solid surface product, is typically stronger and more crack resistant than other materials. Cultured Onyx is also a flame retardant; so while Cultured Onyx products could be consumed by a fire that is hot enough, they will not promote or spread fire and will, in fact, try to put it out when exposed to the flames.

The gloss-finished products also have a tough, chemical resistant layer on the surface that keeps them from staining when exposed to chemicals such as hair dyes and nail polishes. The gloss layer also protects the material from scratches under normal use in the bathroom.
